beyond / Vessels; is a project that aims to take action on single use plastics. It is engined by the necessity of a circular economy, and creating awareness; while exploring the arts and crafts’ place. The vessels are made from discarded single use plastic bottles and bags, crafted to create a series of unique, handmade sculptural objects. By exploring and embracing the characteristics of the raw material to the fullest, the plastics are shaped with heat in a semi-controlled way, in order to get a different morphology through the material natural behavior. After shape-shifting, it is when material-shifting happens by adding layers of clay. Waste has become something else, hoping to create awareness on the action. The single use plastic is now a collectible piece, reassessing the way we look at it. The objects are built confronting traditional crafting techniques with plastic industrial manufacturing. The raw aesthetics are sacrificed and replaced by a new one, a more “socially acceptable” one, defying those skeptical minds. It is a project that tells different stories and perspectives, not only to embrace what was mentioned before, but also to study the relationship between meaning and matter, social responsibility, art, and the need to maintain a contemporary vision.
